Talking Pigskin News Report

That roof-top satellite dish won’t have much appeal to National Football League fans come the 2023 season.

Having been the exclusive carrier of the NFL Sunday Ticket since 1994, DirecTV has not renewed its rights deal beyond the current 2022 season.

Instead, YouTube TV will replace the satellite television provider as the new distributor of NFL Sunday Ticket as the result of an agreement between the NFL and Google.

The arrangement grants Google the rights to the highly-coveted television package, which has allowed fans to view all out-of-market games live every Sunday during the NFL regular season for nearly 30 years.

The National Football League today announced a multi-year agreement with Google granting YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels the right to exclusively distribute NFL Sunday Ticket to consumers in the United States starting with the 2023 NFL season. This strategic partnership will provide fans greater access to NFL Sunday Ticket while tapping into the best of YouTube’s technology and product innovation. … Starting next season, NFL Sunday Ticket will be available on two of YouTube’s growing subscription businesses as an add-on package on YouTube TV and standalone a-la-carte on YouTube Primetime Channels.

NFL Communications News Release

According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal is reportedly worth $14 billion over seven years with Google paying approximately $2 billion per season to the NFL.

In addition to setting an expectation for updated NFL Sunday Ticket product features and functionality ahead of the 2023 season, the official press release noted that “the NFL and YouTube will work together to determine additional ways to support distribution of NFL Sunday Ticket in commercial establishments such as bars and restaurants.”
